Wellington Firebirds’ left-hander Luke Woodcock became Wellington Cricket’s all-time single season highest first-class run-scorer during his innings of 76 against the Canterbury Wizards in Rangiora over the weekend.
Woodcock moved past the single season run-mark of 888 set by Robert Vance in the 1988/89 season when he reached 54 soon after lunch on the opening day’s play on Saturday.
When he reached 65 he also became the first Wellington batsman and just the eighth batsman in New Zealand domestic cricket history to pass 900 runs in a single season for their province, behind record holder Martin Crowe who scored 1348 runs for Central Districts in 1986/87.
With a possible three innings still to play this season (as of Monday), Woodcock has the chance to become the first Wellington batsman to break 1,000 runs in a single first-class season.
Woodcock has scored six 50s and one century (220 not out against Central Districts in December) from 17 innings at an average of 70.07.
